From Retro to Classic

no comments 2007 at 3:03 pm posted by admin

From Retro to ClassicThis is one of our favorite projects as it was challenging in its scope and required our utmost creativity. We started with a 1970’s era home and finished with a show piece that has a rustic and classic elegance .

Part 1: Cleaning, Painting, and Priming
We started this project by pressure cleaning the entire home and caulking all surfaces. Next we used Benjamin Moore’s “Fresh Start” latex primer to prime all of the dated orange to brown colored brick on the home. To insure optimal consistency, we tinted the primer to a tan/taupe stone color chosen by the homeowner.

After we had the primer applied, we painted the brick surface with Benjamin Moore’s “Low Luster Moore Guard ” latex exterior finish coat that was tinted to the same tan stone color. Next we painted the home’s trim, windows, doors, gutters and downspouts with “Moore Gaurd Soft Gloss” in a slightly darker color.

Traditional Shutter Construction and InstallationPart 2: Shutter Construction and Installation
For Part 2 of this project, we used first choice pine from 84 Lumber to construct forty-two board and batten shutters made two inches thick and eight inches wide . We planed and routed each piece to give the wood the right thickness, smoothness, and angled edge before cutting the wood to size.

Next we carefully measured each window and cut the number of boards to the size of the windows. After constructing the shutters we sanded each one smooth. Then we airless-sprayed the primer and the paint a color slightly darker than the trim.

After purchasing the working “New York” style hinges and shutter dogs at Anderson Lumber, we attached each hinge into the brick and installed the shutter into place, followed by the shutter dog tie backs.

The Fruit of Our Labors
The transformation of the home was stunning. The home went from a dated, nineteen seventies large home, to a updated rustic, almost English looking show home. We were very happy with the opportunity to create such a enjoyable and beautiful look, and we were especially pleased with the home owner’s excitement.

If your home is in need of an exterior update like as this, we would love to talk with you about a project such as this one. Feel free to send us an email, or request an estimate.

Parade of Homes ProjectParade of Homes ProjectA local builder asked us to paint the interiors and exteriors of this home that was featured in the “2006 Parade of Homes” in Fox Run Subdivision.

We began by priming, prepping, and painting the walls, ceilings, and trim in the entire home. Next, we stained all the interior railing, bead board ceilings , the exterior columns, exterior bead board, the exterior shutters, and the massive front door. We followed all staining with two coats of “Sikkens” satin polyurethane.

Interior new construction painting.Parade of Homes ProjectTo wrap up the project, we caulked all the exterior doors and windows with Benjamin Moore’s Fifty Year Clear Elastic caulking.

This was one of the many extravagant homes that we have worked on.

Deck with a View

no comments 2007 at 3:02 pm posted by admin

A beautiful deck and a beautiful view. With a beautiful view surrounding us as we worked, this is one of our favorite deck staining projects that we have worked on.

The home owner has a beautiful home on a breath-taking lot over looking Fort Loudon Lake. The deck wraps around the entire home facing the water. The view is great but the weather on the lake is harsh and constant. I suggested using Sikkens two coat process to give the wood superior protection as well as a hard wood floor like finish.

The cedar stain really made this deck a show piece. We began by pressure cleaning the wood followed by twenty four hours of drying time. We then followed with five days and sixteen gallons of brushing, with a full day of drying time between coats. The finished look was perfect and matched the color of the hardwood flooring on the inside of the house, giving it a continuous look and a smooth appearance. The color was Cedar, and it really looked great. So much so, that I really wish I had used that color on my own deck! Oh well, maybe next time.

Perfect Painting Palette

no comments 2007 at 8:55 am posted by admin

Multi-color paint job? No problem. This is an interior repainting project where the homeowner wanted to do several complimenting colors with accent color walls. The challenge on this project was to come up with the perfect painting palette that added to the home’s warmth and appeal.

Multiple color usage scares some homeowners. Color selection is somewhat overwhelming to many. I enjoy making suggestions when asked. I can usually get a feel for a homeowners style by their furnishings, window treatments , and the dreaded wall paper. (We also remove busy-design wallpaper although, I have seen some tasteful and unique wallpaper designs — If that is the case, I can match a paint color to complement the paper.)

This particular project worked well, because all the colors not only complemented each other, they also complemented the home furnishings. (I always knew my color and design class in art school would pay off someday!) The spaces in the home and the way the home was laid out really lent itself to placing the colors where you could see them complementing each other at open views.

Another interior view.In the kitchen of this project, we added a tile back splash to show off the wonderful cherry cabinets (and to keep water off the paint!). In the children’s rooms we did two colors on opposite walls to make the rooms fun. Usually the colors are the child’s selection, after all it’s he child’s room. We feel that the family home is an important place where many memories are created. We like to add to the family enjoyment and the expressions of the individual family members.
